Baby Name Letter Calculator (Namkaran by Nakshatra)
In the Namkaran tradition, a baby's name begins with a sound chosen from the nakshatra and pada the Moon occupied at birth. Each of the 27 nakshatras has four padas (quarters), and each pada carries an auspicious syllable. Enter the birth details below to find the exact starting sound for your child — and the other three sounds of their birth star to choose from.

What is Namkaran by nakshatra?
Namkaran is the Hindu naming ceremony, traditionally held on the eleventh or twelfth day after birth. A key part is choosing the name's first syllable from the Avakahada chakra — a classical table that assigns one auspicious sound to each of the 108 nakshatra padas (27 nakshatras × 4 quarters).
The idea is that a name beginning with the syllable of the child's birth star stays in harmony with their Moon and birth chart. Even today many families pick the first letter this way and then choose a meaningful name that starts with that sound.
Using your child's name sound
The most precise choice is the syllable of the exact pada the Moon was in at birth — which needs the birth time. But all four syllables of the birth star are considered auspicious, so you have a small set of sounds to build a name around. Pick the one that leads to a name you love and that carries a good meaning.
Many classical syllables (like “Chu”, “La”, “Ye”) map naturally to common names; others are rarer. The four-sound view lets you keep tradition while still finding a name that feels right.
The four padas and how the sound is fixed
Each of the 27 nakshatras spans 13°20′ of the zodiac and is divided into four equal padas (quarters) of 3°20′ each. The pada the Moon occupied at the exact moment of birth fixes the single most precise name-sound; because the Moon crosses a pada in roughly an hour, the birth time matters for this.
Those same four padas also map onto the navamsa (D9) chart, which is why the pada is treated as a meaningful, chart-level division rather than just a label. When the birth time is unknown, all four sounds of the birth star are offered, since each one is auspicious.
Nakshatra name vs. the everyday name
Traditionally the nakshatra-based syllable gives the formal name used in ceremonies and horoscope matching, while families are free to choose a popular calling name too — some even keep the nakshatra name private and use a different everyday name.
You can also name by Moon sign (rashi): each of the 12 rashis has its own set of starting sounds. But the nakshatra-pada method is more precise, since it narrows 12 signs down to 108 padas.

Frequently Asked Questions
- How is the baby name letter decided?
- It comes from the nakshatra (birth star) and pada the Moon occupied at the time of birth. A classical table called the Avakahada chakra assigns an auspicious starting syllable to each of the 108 padas.
- Do I have to use the exact pada syllable?
- The exact pada sound is the most precise, but all four syllables of the birth star are auspicious. Most families choose whichever sound leads to a beautiful, meaningful name.
- What if I don't know the birth time?
- You'll still get the birth star's four sounds from the date. The exact pada needs a birth time because the Moon moves through a pada in about an hour — we'll flag it if the star itself was changing that day.
- Are these syllables in Hindi or Sanskrit?
- They are Sanskrit sounds shown in Devanagari with a simple English transliteration, so they work for names in any Indian language.
- Should I name by nakshatra or by rashi (Moon sign)?
- The nakshatra-pada method is the more precise tradition and what this tool uses. Naming by Moon sign is also accepted — each rashi has its own sounds — but it is broader. If you have the birth time, the nakshatra pada is the best choice.
- When is the Namkaran ceremony performed?
- Traditionally on the 11th or 12th day after birth, though some families do it later on an auspicious muhurta. The chosen first syllable is used whenever the formal name is given.
- What if no name I like starts with the suggested sound?
- All four syllables of the birth star are auspicious, so you have four sounds to choose from. Many parents pick the one that leads to a meaningful name they love.
