Lagna (Ascendant) Calculator

As the Earth turns, each of the twelve zodiac signs rises over the eastern horizon once a day. The sign rising at your birth moment, as seen from your birth place, is your Lagna. Two people born on the same day in different cities — or the same city two hours apart — usually have different Lagnas, and with them entirely different house layouts in their charts.

In Vedic astrology the Lagna is the chart's anchor: it represents your body, temperament and the way you meet the world, and every house meaning — wealth, siblings, career, marriage — is counted from it. Your daily horoscope may run on your Moon sign, but a proper birth-chart reading starts at the Lagna.

The ascendant moves through all 360 degrees of the zodiac every 24 hours — about one degree every four minutes. An error of even half an hour in your birth time can shift the Lagna into the neighbouring sign, which changes the entire chart that follows from it. This is the one calculation where “roughly evening” is not good enough.

Three things, in order. First the rising sign itself: it colours your body, bearing and the style with which you meet anything new — the 'default setting' people experience before they know you. Second, the Lagna lord: the planet ruling your rising sign carries your first house wherever it sits, so its house, sign and strength show where your life finds its footing. Third, planets in the first house: anything placed there stands at your front door and shows in your face, frame and manner.
