Life Path Number (Bhagyank)

Your Life Path number — known as the Bhagyank in Indian numerology — is found from your full date of birth. Where the radical number shows who you are by nature, the Life Path number points to the larger arc of your life: the opportunities, lessons and direction you grow towards.

What the Life Path number is

The Life Path number reduces your entire date of birth — day, month and year — to a single digit. It is the closest thing numerology has to a life theme: the road you tend to walk and the lessons that road keeps offering. Many numerologists weigh it even more heavily than the radical number, since it reflects your whole birth date rather than just the day.

How to find your Life Path number

Reduce each part of your date of birth to a single digit, add the three together, then reduce once more. For 23 April 1992: the day 23 becomes 5, the month is 4, and the year 1992 becomes 3. Adding 5 + 4 + 3 gives 12, which reduces to 3 — a Life Path number of 3.

Day
23 → 2 + 3 = 5
Month
04 → 4
Year
1992 → 1 + 9 + 9 + 2 = 21 → 3
Life Path number
5 + 4 + 3 = 12 → 3

When the total is a master number

If the parts add up to 11, 22 or 33 before the final reduction, many numerologists keep that total whole rather than reducing it. These are the master numbers — read as stronger, more demanding versions of the 2, 4 and 6 they would otherwise become.

Life Path number vs radical number

The two are often read side by side. The radical number (Mulank) uses only your day of birth and describes your instinctive temperament; the Life Path number uses the full date and describes your direction. Where they agree, a trait tends to be strongly marked; where they differ, each adds a different layer to the reading.

Frequently asked questions

What is Bhagyank?
Bhagyank is the Indian name for the Life Path number — the single-digit number found by reducing your full date of birth. It points to the broader direction and lessons of your life.
How do I calculate my Life Path number?
Reduce the day, month and year of your birth each to a single digit, add the three, then reduce again. For 23 April 1992: 5 + 4 + 3 = 12 → 3, a Life Path number of 3.
Which is more important, the radical or the Life Path number?
Both are read together. Many numerologists give the Life Path number slightly more weight because it reflects your whole date of birth, while the radical number reads your day-of-birth temperament.
What if my Life Path total is 11, 22 or 33?
These are master numbers and are usually kept whole instead of being reduced. They are read as more intense versions of 2, 4 and 6.
