Nakshatra (Birth Star) Calculator

Your nakshatra is the lunar mansion — one of 27 star segments of the sky — that the Moon occupied at your birth. It is the finest detail of your Moon's position: it names your birth star, fixes the starting planet of your dasha cycle, and traditionally guides everything from your name's first letter to marriage matching.

What is a nakshatra?

Vedic astrology divides the zodiac into 27 equal parts of 13°20′ each, called nakshatras. While a zodiac sign is a broad 30-degree house, the nakshatra pinpoints the Moon's position more than twice as precisely. Each one carries its own symbol, deity, nature and ruling planet — Ashwini is ruled by Ketu, Rohini by the Moon, Pushya by Saturn, and so on.

Each nakshatra is further split into four quarters called padas of 3°20′ each. The pada refines the reading again — it decides the traditional first syllable for a baby's name and the navamsa position of your Moon. That's why our result shows both the nakshatra and the pada.

Your nakshatra lord starts your dasha clock

The planet that rules your birth nakshatra is not a trivia detail — it sets your entire Vimshottari dasha sequence, the timeline system Vedic astrologers use to time events in your life. Born in a Venus-ruled nakshatra like Bharani or Purva Phalguni? Your life's planetary periods begin with Venus, and how far the Moon had travelled through the nakshatra decides how much of that first period remained at birth.

This is also why the nakshatra matters in marriage matching: most of the 36 Gun Milan points — Tara, Yoni, Gana, Nadi — are scored from the two birth stars, not the signs.

What is your nakshatra used for?

Almost every practical ritual of Vedic astrology runs on the birth nakshatra. Marriage matching scores most of its 36 gunas from the two birth stars. A newborn's name traditionally begins with the syllable of its nakshatra pada. The Vimshottari dasha — the timeline astrologers use to date events — starts from the nakshatra's lord. Daily muhurat picks favourable days by counting from your birth star (the tara bala), and even first impressions get read through the star's nature: its deity, symbol and temperament.

That is why the nakshatra is often called the most personal point in a Vedic chart: the rashi gives the broad emotional shape, but the birth star pins down its flavour — one of 27 rather than one of 12.

These portraits follow the classical associations (deity, symbol, lord). Your pada, the Moon's condition and the rest of the chart refine them — treat each as a starting point, not a verdict.

How to find your nakshatra

Frequently Asked Questions

What is my nakshatra by date of birth?
Your nakshatra is the 13°20′ segment of the zodiac the Moon occupied when you were born. Enter your birth details above — the calculator computes the Moon's sidereal longitude with the Lahiri ayanamsa and names your birth star and pada instantly.
Do I need my birth time for the nakshatra?
It helps a lot. The Moon spends roughly 24 hours in each nakshatra, so on most dates it changes star sometime during the day. Without a time we calculate for noon and clearly tell you if a different nakshatra was also possible on your date.
What is a pada?
Each nakshatra divides into 4 padas (quarters) of 3°20′. The pada traditionally fixes the first syllable of a baby's name and refines chart readings. The calculator shows your pada as 1, 2, 3 or 4 alongside the star.
What is the nakshatra lord?
Every nakshatra is ruled by one of nine planets in a fixed cycle — Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury. Your birth nakshatra's lord starts your Vimshottari dasha sequence, the timing system of Vedic astrology.
Is the nakshatra used in kundli matching?
Yes — most of it. Of the 36 Gun Milan points, the Tara, Yoni, Gana and Nadi scores (21 of 36 points) come directly from the two partners' nakshatras. You can check a full match with our Kundli Matching calculator.
