How a Rudraksha is chosen

In the Shiva Purana tradition each mukhi has a ruling planet and deity: 1-mukhi for the Sun (Shiva), 2 for the Moon, 3 for Mars (Agni), 4 for Mercury (Brahma), 5 for Jupiter (Kalagni Rudra), 6 for Venus (Kartikeya), 7 for Saturn (Mahalakshmi), 8 for Rahu (Ganesha) and 9 for Ketu (Durga). Wearing the bead of your ruling planet is said to balance and strengthen it.

This tool maps your ascendant lord (or, without a birth time, your Moon sign lord) to its bead. Unlike gemstones, Rudraksha carries no “avoid” list — and the five-faced (Panchamukhi) bead is considered safe and beneficial for everyone, which is why we always show it too.

Wearing a Rudraksha

Rudraksha is traditionally strung on red or black thread or in silver/gold, energised with its beej mantra, and worn after a simple purification. Genuine beads with clear, natural mukhi lines are preferred over polished imitations.

Because it is regarded as Shiva's grace rather than a planet-amplifier, a Rudraksha is considered gentle and safe to wear regardless of your chart — making it a popular first remedy. Even so, for a serious concern it is worth confirming with an astrologer or a knowledgeable source.

The mukhi system: faces, planets and deities

“Mukhi” means face — the number of natural clefts (lines) running from the top to the bottom of the bead. That count, decided by nature as the seed grows, fixes the bead's ruling planet and presiding deity, and therefore what it is worn for. The everyday range is 1 to 14 mukhi, each bead rarer and costlier as the face count rises.

The 1 to 9 mukhi beads map cleanly onto the nine grahas (planets), which is what this tool recommends. Higher beads (10 to 14 mukhi) are tied to deities rather than single planets — 10 mukhi to Vishnu, 11 to Hanuman, 12 to the Sun, 13 to Kamadeva/Indra and 14 to Shiva. There are also two famous “joined” beads: Ganesha (a bead with a natural trunk-like projection) and Gauri-Shankar (two beads naturally fused), worn for wisdom and harmonious union.

Genuine bead, and who can wear one

Authenticity matters more than size. A real Rudraksha has deep, continuous, naturally-formed mukhi lines and a hard, woody surface; carved fakes show tool marks and lines that don't run the full length. Reputable sellers provide a lab certificate, and higher mukhi beads especially should never be bought uncertified. The old “sink or float in water” and “spin between two coins” tests are unreliable folklore — trust the certificate and the clarity of the lines instead.

Unlike gemstones, tradition places no restrictions on Rudraksha: it may be worn by anyone regardless of age, gender, sign or dasha, since it is considered Shiva's grace rather than a planet amplifier. The 5 mukhi (Panchamukhi) bead in particular is regarded as universally safe and beneficial, which is why a 108-bead japa mala is almost always strung from it.

The fourteen mukhis of the Shiva Purana, face by face

The Shiva Purana describes fourteen mukhis. The first nine map to the nine planets — which is what the calculator above recommends — while 10 to 14 are tied to deities. Find your ruling planet above, then read its bead here; each bead’s colour marks its planet or deity.

1 Mukhi — Sun

Deity: Shiva

The rarest and most revered bead, the symbol of supreme consciousness. Worn for clarity, leadership, focus and detachment, and to strengthen a weak or afflicted Sun. The round 1-mukhi is extremely rare; the half-moon (kaju) form is the one usually available.

2 Mukhi — Moon

Deity: Ardhanareeshwar

The bead of unity and relationships. Worn for emotional balance, a calm mind, harmony between partners and the bond with the mother — a gentle support for an afflicted Moon.

3 Mukhi — Mars

Deity: Agni

The bead of energy and renewal. Said to burn away past guilt and setbacks, lift self-confidence, drive and vitality, and steady an angry or debilitated Mars.

4 Mukhi — Mercury

Deity: Brahma

The bead of knowledge and speech. Favoured by students, teachers, writers and speakers for sharper memory, learning, wit and clear communication.

5 Mukhi — Jupiter

Deity: Kalagni Rudra

By far the most common bead and the one used for japa malas. Worn for wisdom, peace of mind, health and spiritual growth — and considered safe and beneficial for everyone, whatever their chart.

6 Mukhi — Venus

Deity: Kartikeya

The bead of willpower, focus and relationships. Worn for grounding, emotional steadiness, charm and the comforts and partnerships Venus governs.

7 Mukhi — Saturn

Deity: Mahalakshmi

The bead of fortune and relief. Worn for wealth, opportunities and respite from the hardships of Saturn — especially during Sade Sati and Shani dasha.

8 Mukhi — Rahu

Deity: Ganesha

The remover of obstacles. Worn for success against sudden hurdles, protection from the confusion and malefic effects of Rahu, and steadiness during Rahu dasha.

9 Mukhi — Ketu

Deity: Durga

The bead of energy and fearlessness. Worn for divine protection, courage, freedom from hidden fears and balance through the ups and downs of Ketu dasha.

10 Mukhi — Vishnu

Deity: Vishnu (Janardana)

Tied to no single planet; it works like a protective shield, often linked to Lord Vishnu’s Sudarshan. Worn to ward off negative energies, disputes and the combined ill effects of all nine planets.

11 Mukhi — Eleven Rudras

Deity: the eleven Rudras / Hanuman

Embodies the eleven Rudras and Hanuman. Worn for courage, wisdom, willpower and success; the Shiva Purana says its wearer is victorious in all endeavours.

12 Mukhi — Sun (Adityas)

Deity: the twelve Adityas (Surya)

Carries the power of the twelve Adityas (forms of the Sun). Worn for radiance, leadership, administrative power and freedom from worry — favoured by those in authority.

13 Mukhi — Indra / Kamadeva

Deity: Indra and Kamadeva

Linked to Indra and Kamadeva. Worn for charisma, magnetism, fulfilment of desires and worldly comforts and gains.

14 Mukhi — Shiva (Deva Mani)

Deity: Shiva

The most prized bead, called Deva Mani and traditionally worn on the head. Sacred to Lord Shiva, it is said to awaken intuition (the “third eye”), remove sins and grant protection and good health.

Beyond the fourteen mukhis there are also special “joined” beads — Ganesha (a bead with a natural trunk-like projection) and Gauri-Shankar (two beads naturally fused) — tied to deities and chosen for specific goals, usually with an astrologer's or guru's guidance. Always buy higher mukhi beads certified.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Rudraksha should I wear?
Wear the mukhi linked to your ruling planet — your ascendant lord when the birth time is known, otherwise your Moon sign lord. The 5-mukhi (Panchamukhi) bead is also recommended for everyone.
Can anyone wear a Rudraksha?
Yes. Unlike gemstones, traditional sources say a Rudraksha may be worn regardless of horoscope, sign or dasha, because it is considered Shiva's grace rather than a planet amplifier.
What does mukhi mean?
Mukhi means “face” — the number of natural clefts or lines running from top to bottom of the bead. A 5-mukhi bead has five faces. The face count decides its ruling planet and deity.
Where do these mappings come from?
The mukhi-to-deity and planet mappings follow classical references — primarily the Shiva Purana and Padma Purana — rather than commercial seller charts.
How do I check if a Rudraksha is genuine?
Look for deep, continuous, naturally-formed mukhi lines running the full length of the bead and a hard, woody surface; carved fakes show tool marks and broken lines. For valuable higher-mukhi beads, rely on a lab certificate. The “float in water” and “spin between coins” tests are unreliable folklore.
Which mukhi is best for my planet?
Wear the bead of your ruling planet: 1 mukhi → Sun, 2 → Moon, 3 → Mars, 4 → Mercury, 5 → Jupiter, 6 → Venus, 7 → Saturn, 8 → Rahu, 9 → Ketu. Enter your birth details above and the tool names yours, plus the universal 5 mukhi.
How many beads are in a Rudraksha mala?
A traditional japa mala has 108 beads plus one “meru” (sumeru) bead, almost always 5 mukhi since it is considered safe for everyone. It is used to count mantras and can be worn daily.
