Kundli Matching
Kundli Matching — Gun Milan Calculator
Kundli matching compares two birth charts for marriage using the classical Ashtakoot system — eight tests scored out of 36 points, prescribed in the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra. Enter both partners' birth details below for the full free score with every koot explained, calculated from each person's actual Moon position.

How the 36 points break down
The eight koots weigh different layers of a match, from social compatibility to health of the lineage: Varna (1 point) compares temperamental class, Vashya (2) mutual influence, Tara (3) birth-star destiny, Yoni (4) physical compatibility, Graha Maitri (5) friendship of the two Moon-sign lords, Gana (6) temperament type, Bhakoot (7) the distance between the two Moon signs, and Nadi (8) — the weightiest — constitutional and progeny compatibility.
Notice that the big points sit at the bottom of the list: Nadi and Bhakoot together carry 15 of the 36 points, which is why two charts can match well on personality yet score poorly overall. Traditionally 18 of 36 is the minimum considered acceptable — the full bands this calculator uses are in the score guide below.
The 8 Ashtakoot tests, one by one
Varna — 1 point
Compares the temperamental “class” of the two birth stars — Brahmin (thoughtful), Kshatriya (action-driven), Vaishya (practical) or Shudra (service-minded). Classically the point is earned when the boy's varna is the same as or higher than the girl's — a light-weight check of spiritual compatibility.
Vashya — 2 points
Asks who naturally influences whom. Each rashi belongs to a group — human, wild, four-footed, water-dwelling or insect — and some groups sway others. Full points mean neither partner dominates; low points warn of a one-sided pull.
Tara — 3 points
Counts the distance between the two birth stars in cycles of nine (the taras), checking whether each person's star falls favourably from the other's. Tradition reads it for shared luck and wellbeing — friction here is taken as fortune and health strain.
Yoni — 4 points
Every nakshatra carries one of 14 animal natures — horse, elephant, serpent, mongoose and so on. Same or friendly animals score high, reading as instinctive physical compatibility; born-enemy pairs like serpent and mongoose score zero.
Graha Maitri — 5 points
Checks whether the lords of the two Moon signs are planetary friends, neutral, or enemies. Friendly lords are read as minds on the same wavelength — this is the mental-compatibility test, and a major chunk of the score.
Gana — 6 points
Sorts every nakshatra into three temperaments — Deva (gentle), Manushya (balanced) and Rakshasa (intense). Same gana scores full; a Deva–Rakshasa pairing scores lowest — read as clashing instincts, not “good versus evil”.
Bhakoot — 7 points
Counts the gap between the two Moon signs around the zodiac. Three distances — 2/12, 5/9 and 6/8 — are classical doshas linked to money, children and health friction, and score zero; every other placement earns the full seven.
Nadi — 8 points
The heaviest single test. Each nakshatra belongs to one of three nadis — Adi, Madhya, Antya — tied in tradition to constitution and progeny. Different nadis earn all eight points; the same nadi scores zero, the famous Nadi dosha. Check its classical cancellations before drawing conclusions.

What a low score does — and doesn't — mean
A low Gun Milan score is a flag for specific frictions, not a verdict on the relationship. The most common reason a score collapses is Nadi dosha — both partners having the same Nadi — which alone removes 8 points. Classical texts also list cancellations (Nadi dosha is traditionally considered cancelled when both partners share the same Rashi but different nakshatras, among other conditions) that a score alone cannot show.
Astrologers therefore read the score alongside Manglik status, the seventh house, Venus and the running dasha periods before advising anyone. Treat the number as the start of the conversation — and if it worries you, have the full charts read rather than walking away from a 14.

Frequently Asked Questions
- How is Kundli matching calculated?
- Both partners' Moon positions are computed astronomically for their birth date, time and place. From each Moon position come the Rashi and nakshatra, and the eight Ashtakoot tests — Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot, Nadi — are scored from those, totalling 36 points.
- What is a good Gun Milan score for marriage?
- Tradition treats 18 of 36 as the minimum acceptable. In the bands this calculator uses, 17–20 reads as average, 21–27 as good, and 28+ as excellent. Below 18, astrologers look deeper before advising — particularly at which koot lost the points and whether a dosha cancellation applies.
- What is Nadi dosha and how serious is it?
- Nadi dosha occurs when both partners have the same Nadi (Adi, Madhya or Antya) — it scores 0 of 8 points, the largest single loss possible. Classical texts treat it seriously for health and progeny, but also list cancellations, such as both partners sharing the same Rashi with different nakshatras. Have a low Nadi score checked by an astrologer before drawing conclusions.
- Is birth time required for Kundli matching?
- The date is required; time and place make the result reliable. Without a time we use noon, and on dates when the Moon changed sign or nakshatra the score can shift. Since most of the 36 points derive from the nakshatra, exact times for both partners are worth finding.
- What does the full report add beyond this free score?
- The free tool gives the complete 36-point Ashtakoot breakdown. The full report behind a free login adds the checks astrologers insist on alongside it: Manglik (Mangal dosha) analysis for both charts, koot-by-koot interpretation, and saved profiles so you can compare matches.
- Is this the same as the love calculator?
- They are two doors into the same classical system. The love calculator matches by name — each name's first syllable points to a nakshatra through the Avakahada chakra, the traditional method when birth details aren't known. This page computes both partners' actual Moon positions from birth date, time and place, and scores the same eight koots from those. When you have birth details, trust this score — it is the precise version.
