Mangal Dosha Calculator
Mangal Dosha (Manglik) Calculator
Mangal Dosha — being “Manglik” — is one of the first things checked before a Hindu marriage. It forms when Mars sits in certain houses of your birth chart, where tradition links it to friction or delay in married life. This calculator places Mars from your Lagna, Moon and Venus, tells you clearly whether the dosha forms, and — just as importantly — whether a classical exception cancels it.
Check Your Mangal Dosha (Manglik)
The Lagna changes roughly every 2 hours, so the exact birth time and place are needed for a correct answer.
What is Mangal Dosha?
Mangal Dosha (also called Kuja Dosha or Manglik Dosha) forms when Mars — the planet of energy, drive and conflict — occupies the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of the chart. These are the houses tied to the self, family, home, marriage, intimacy and loss, so a fiery Mars here is traditionally read as straining the marriage bond.
The check is done from three reference points, not one: the Lagna (ascendant), the Moon, and Venus — the natural significator of marriage. Mars sitting in a dosha house from any of them flags the chart as Manglik. Counting from all three is what separates a careful reading from the quick “Lagna-only” checks most sites use.
The cancellation rules most calculators skip
A Manglik flag is only half the story. The classical texts list many exceptions — Mangal Dosha Bhanga — where the dosha is cancelled or sharply reduced: Mars in its own sign (Aries or Scorpio) or exalted in Capricorn; Mars in the 2nd house in a Mercury sign or the 12th in a Venus sign; and, most powerfully, Jupiter sitting with or aspecting Mars. The Moon joined to Mars softens it too.
This calculator checks those exceptions and shows you which ones apply, so a “Manglik” result doesn't frighten you needlessly. One thing we deliberately leave out is the popular “the dosha disappears after 28” belief — it has no basis in the classical texts, so we don't claim it.
How serious is being Manglik?
Less than the reputation suggests. Mangal Dosha is a compatibility factor, not a life sentence: it is weighed against the partner's chart, and a very common rule is that if both people are Manglik, the dosha cancels out between them. Even a single-chart Manglik is routinely balanced by a strong Jupiter, a strong 7th house and its lord.
Treat a Manglik result as a prompt to match charts carefully and, if you wish, to perform the traditional remedies — not as a reason to call off a match. The healthiest use of this check is information, not fear.
Manglik from the Moon and Venus
Most free “Manglik calculators” look at Mars from the Lagna and stop there. Classical practice also counts the houses from the Moon — your emotional chart — and from Venus, the significator of marriage and spouse. A chart can be clear from the Lagna but Manglik from the Moon, which is why this tool shows all three and names exactly which reference triggered the result.
Remedies for Mangal Dosha
Traditional responses to a Manglik chart are gentler than the fear around it. The most common are devotion to Mars's deities — worshipping Hanuman, a Tuesday fast and the Hanuman Chalisa — and donating red items such as masoor dal or red cloth on Tuesdays. For a strongly Manglik chart, some families perform a Kumbh Vivah, a symbolic marriage to a peepal or banana tree (or a Vishnu idol) before the wedding. But the simplest and most accepted remedy is in the matching itself: a partner whose chart balances or shares the Manglik factor. Treat remedies as reassurance, and let a qualified astrologer confirm what, if anything, your chart actually needs.
What Mangal Dosha does, house by house
Where Mars sits decides what it strains — and how strongly depends on the sign and any cancellation. The calculator names your house; here is what each one traditionally points to.
1st house
Lagna, the ascendant
Mars on the ascendant gives a forceful, restless, courageous temperament — plenty of energy and initiative. The flip side is a short fuse and a need to dominate, which can overpower a marriage if it goes unchecked.
2nd house
family, speech & money
Added later to the Manglik list, Mars here can mean blunt words, family friction and strain on savings. Channelled well, the same drive builds wealth and protects the family.
4th house
home & peace of mind
Mars here brings restlessness and a domestic life that is hard to settle, with inner tension underneath. Directed positively, it can pour real effort into property and the home.
7th house
marriage & spouse
The marriage house itself, and the most direct placement — linked to delay, ego clashes and friction with the spouse. With a mature partner and a calm Mars, it reads more as passion and drive than conflict.
8th house
intimacy, in-laws & change
Mars here is read as tension around closeness, longevity and unexpected ups and downs, often on the in-law side. It also gives resilience and a capacity to recover from shocks.
12th house
the bed & expenses
Mars here points to strain in intimacy, rising costs and, unchecked, a pull toward distance or separation. Turned inward, the same energy supports privacy, travel and spiritual effort.
These are tendencies, not fixed outcomes — a strong Jupiter, a well-placed 7th lord or a balancing partner chart can soften any of them.

Frequently Asked Questions
- How do I know if I am Manglik?
- You are Manglik if Mars sits in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house of your birth chart, counted from the Lagna, Moon or Venus. Enter your birth details above and the calculator places Mars from all three and tells you instantly — along with any classical exception that cancels the dosha.
- Does Mangal Dosha really delay or harm marriage?
- Classically it is associated with friction or delay, but it is treated as one compatibility factor among many, not a verdict. It is weighed against the partner's chart, and several cancellation rules can neutralise it. Most astrologers read a Manglik chart calmly, not fearfully.
- What cancels Mangal Dosha?
- Several classical exceptions: Mars in its own sign (Aries/Scorpio) or exalted (Capricorn); Mars in the 2nd house in Gemini or Virgo, or the 12th in Taurus or Libra; Jupiter conjunct or aspecting Mars; the Moon with Mars; and, in matching, both partners being Manglik. This calculator checks these and shows which apply.
- Is the 2nd house really a Mangal Dosha house?
- It depends on the tradition. The older Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra lists only the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th and 12th. The 2nd was added later by Jataka Parijata and is standard in most North- and South-Indian practice today. We include it and clearly flag when your result depends on it.
- Do two Manglik people cancel each other's dosha?
- Yes — this is one of the most widely used matching rules. When both partners are Manglik, the dosha is considered to balance out between them, and the match is treated as compatible on this factor. For a full two-chart check, use our Kundli Matching calculator.
- What are the types of Manglik dosha?
- By strength: a chart is fully (poorna) Manglik when Mars sits in a dosha house with no exception, partial (anshik) when a cancellation rule softens it, and not Manglik when Mars avoids those houses. Some also call it “double” Manglik when Mars falls in dosha houses from more than one reference. This calculator shows which case is yours.
- What are the remedies for Mangal Dosha?
- Traditional remedies centre on Mars's deities — worshipping Hanuman, fasting on Tuesdays and reciting the Hanuman Chalisa — along with donating red items on Tuesdays. For a strongly Manglik chart some perform a Kumbh Vivah before marriage. The most accepted remedy, though, is matching the two charts well; have a qualified astrologer confirm what your chart needs.
