How a gemstone is chosen
Each of the nine planets has its own Navaratna gemstone: the Sun's ruby, the Moon's pearl, Mars's red coral, Mercury's emerald, Jupiter's yellow sapphire, Venus's diamond, Saturn's blue sapphire, Rahu's hessonite and Ketu's cat's eye. You strengthen a planet by wearing its stone.
The safest classical recommendation is the stone of your Lagna (ascendant) lord — the “life stone”, worn lifelong for vitality and protection. The lords of your 5th and 9th houses give the “intellect” and “fortune” stones, both always benefic. When the birth time is unknown, tradition falls back to the stone of your Janma Rashi (Moon sign) lord, which this tool shows from your date alone.
Wearing a gemstone the right way
A gemstone is traditionally set in a specific metal and worn on a specific finger, started on the planet's weekday after a short cleansing and mantra. Natural, untreated, certified stones of adequate weight are considered effective; synthetic or heavily treated stones are not.
Gems amplify a planet's energy, so the wrong stone can do more harm than good. Treat this tool as a starting point and confirm with a qualified astrologer who has read your full chart before investing in a stone — especially Blue Sapphire (Neelam), which is always tested first.
Life stone, fortune stone and intellect stone
Jyotish does not assign a gemstone by your month of birth the way Western “birthstones” do. It picks stones by the planets that rule key houses of your chart, so a gemstone is matched to your horoscope, not your calendar.
The lord of your 1st house (Lagna / ascendant) gives your life stone — the safest, most universally recommended gem, worn lifelong to strengthen vitality, health and the sense of self. The lord of your 9th house gives the fortune stone (bhagya), tied to luck, dharma and the father; the lord of your 5th house gives the intellect stone (vidya), tied to learning, creativity and children. Because the 5th and 9th are trikona (trine) houses, their lords are always benefic for you, which makes those two stones especially safe to wear together with the life stone.
When your exact birth time is unknown the ascendant cannot be cast, so tradition falls back to the lord of your Moon sign (Janma Rashi) — which this tool derives from your date of birth alone.
Quality, weight, metal and finger
A gemstone is only considered effective if it is natural, untreated and reasonably free of cracks, bubbles and dull patches. Heated, fracture-filled, glass-filled or fully synthetic (lab-grown) stones are regarded as inert in the classical view, so ask for a certificate from a recognised lab before buying. Weight is usually scaled to body weight — a common rule of thumb is roughly one ratti (about 0.91 carat) per 12 kg, with most adults wearing a stone in the 3–6 carat range.
Each gem has its own metal, finger and weekday. Warm-planet stones (ruby, coral, yellow sapphire) are set in gold; cool-planet stones (pearl, diamond, blue sapphire, hessonite, cat's eye) in silver or white gold; emerald takes either. The stone is cleansed in raw milk, honey, Gangajal or water, energised with the planet's beej mantra, and first worn at sunrise on the planet's own weekday so it touches the skin.
The nine Navaratna gemstones, planet by planet
Each of the nine grahas has one primary gemstone and a list of cheaper, traditionally accepted substitutes (uparatna) that support the same planet. Find your ruling planet with the calculator above, then read its stone here — with the metal, finger and weekday tradition prescribes for it.
Ruby — Manik
Sun · gold · ring finger · Sunday
Strengthens the Sun: vitality, confidence, leadership, status and the bond with the father. Suited to those whose Sun rules a key house or sits weak. Worn in gold on the ring finger. Substitutes: red garnet, red spinel, red tourmaline (sunela).
Pearl — Moti
Moon · silver · little finger · Monday
Strengthens the Moon: emotional calm, a settled mind, intuition and the bond with the mother. Helps restlessness and mood swings. Worn in silver on the little finger. Substitutes: moonstone, white coral. Always natural, never heat-treated.
Red Coral — Moonga
Mars · gold or copper · ring finger · Tuesday
Strengthens Mars: courage, drive, stamina and protection from accidents and Mangal dosha. Favoured for low energy or a debilitated Mars. Worn in gold or copper on the ring finger. Substitutes: carnelian, red jasper.
Emerald — Panna
Mercury · gold · little finger · Wednesday
Strengthens Mercury: intelligence, speech, memory, trade and analytical skill. Popular with students, writers and people in business. Worn in gold on the little finger. Substitutes: green tourmaline, peridot, green onyx.
Yellow Sapphire — Pukhraj
Jupiter · gold · index finger · Thursday
Strengthens Jupiter: wisdom, prosperity, good fortune, marriage (especially for women) and spiritual growth. One of the safest, most auspicious stones. Worn in gold on the index finger. Substitutes: yellow topaz, citrine (sunela).
Diamond — Heera
Venus · silver, platinum or white gold · middle or little finger · Friday
Strengthens Venus: love, marriage, luxury, art, beauty and comfort. Worn in silver, platinum or white gold. Substitutes: white sapphire, white zircon, white topaz, opal — the usual budget choice since natural diamonds are costly.
Blue Sapphire — Neelam
Saturn · silver or panchdhatu · middle finger · Saturday
Strengthens Saturn: discipline, career, sudden gains and relief during Sade Sati and Shani dasha. The fastest-acting and most powerful Navaratna — always trial-worn for about three days and never started without an astrologer. Substitutes: amethyst (jamunia), blue zircon, lapis lazuli.
Hessonite — Gomed
Rahu · silver · middle finger · Saturday
Strengthens Rahu: clears confusion, sudden obstacles and the malefic effects of Rahu in the chart; valued during Rahu dasha. Worn in silver on the middle finger. Substitutes: orange/golden zircon, spessartite garnet.
Cat's Eye — Lehsunia
Ketu · silver · middle finger · Saturday or Wednesday
Strengthens Ketu: spiritual insight, protection from hidden enemies and the ups and downs of Ketu dasha. Worn in silver on the middle finger. Substitute: cat's eye quartz (vaiduryam). Like Neelam, considered fast-acting and best worn after a trial.
Metals, fingers and weekdays follow the most common North-Indian tradition; some lineages differ (for example wearing emerald or hessonite on a different finger). When two valid options exist, your astrologer's reading of your chart decides.

Frequently Asked Questions
- Which gemstone should I wear?
- The classical first choice is the gemstone of your ascendant (Lagna) lord — your lifelong “life stone”. If your birth time is unknown, the stone of your Moon sign (Rashi) lord is used instead. This tool shows both where possible.
- Can I wear any gemstone I like?
- No. Gemstones strengthen specific planets, and a stone for a poorly-placed planet can intensify its negative effects. Stones are chosen from your chart, not by preference, which is why an astrologer's check is recommended.
- Why is Blue Sapphire (Neelam) treated differently?
- Neelam strengthens Saturn and acts very fast. Tradition advises a trial of about three days before committing, and never starting it without an astrologer's guidance.
- What are substitute stones?
- Each Navaratna gem has cheaper, traditionally accepted alternatives (uparatna) — for example red garnet for ruby, moonstone for pearl, or amethyst for blue sapphire. They support the same planet at a lower cost.
- Which gemstone is best for my Rashi (Moon sign)?
- It is the stone of your Rashi lord: Aries/Scorpio → red coral (Mars), Taurus/Libra → diamond (Venus), Gemini/Virgo → emerald (Mercury), Cancer → pearl (Moon), Leo → ruby (Sun), Sagittarius/Pisces → yellow sapphire (Jupiter), Capricorn/Aquarius → blue sapphire (Saturn). Enter your date above and the tool names it for you.
- How much should a gemstone weigh?
- Weight is scaled to the wearer — a common guide is about one ratti (roughly 0.91 carat) per 12 kg of body weight, so most adults wear a 3–6 carat stone. What matters more is that it is natural, untreated and certified.
- How long does a gemstone take to show effects?
- Gentle stones like pearl or yellow sapphire are usually given a few weeks to a couple of months. Fast-acting stones — especially Blue Sapphire (Neelam) — are trial-worn for about three days first, and removed at once if you notice clearly negative effects.

Gemstone recommendations are based on traditional Vedic astrology (jyotish ratna) and are for guidance, not prescription. They are not medical, financial or professional advice. Because gems amplify a planet's energy, consult a qualified astrologer with your full birth chart before wearing one — especially Blue Sapphire.
