Ruling Planets

Ruling planets are the handful of planets that hold sway at the moment a question is asked or a decision is judged. They are read straight off the current sky: the lord of the weekday, the sign-lord and star-lord of the Moon, and the sign-lord and star-lord of the rising sign right now. KP astrologers use them as a quick, powerful check — for on-the-spot answers, for fixing an uncertain birth time, and for confirming when an event will land.

The core set is small and fixed: the lord of the current weekday, the sign-lord and star-lord of where the Moon is now, and the sign-lord and star-lord of the Ascendant for this moment and place. Many KP practitioners also add the sub-lords, and treat the Ascendant's lords as the most personal of the group because the rising point reflects the person asking.

Because the ruling planets describe the live moment, they act like a fingerprint of 'now'. If the planets ruling this instant are also the significators of the matter being asked about, KP takes that as strong confirmation the event will come to pass. And since the Ascendant shifts fast, the ruling planets are always a fresh snapshot rather than a fixed feature of a birth chart.

One of the most prized uses of ruling planets is birth-time rectification. The ruling planets at the moment a person comes for a reading — or at a known event in their life — should match the lords of their birth Ascendant and Moon. The astrologer adjusts the uncertain birth time until the chart's lords line up with the ruling planets, settling on the time that makes them agree.

Ruling planets also work the other way round. At the time an event actually happens, the ruling planets of that instant tend to be the significators of the matter — the marriage that takes place under the ruling planets of the 7th house, the job that starts under those of the 10th. KP uses this to confirm and narrow a date already suggested by the dasha.
