Radical Number (Mulank)
Your radical number โ known as the Mulank in Indian numerology โ comes from the single day of the month you were born. It is the first number most people read, because it describes your core nature: how you instinctively think, react and make decisions.
What the radical number is
The radical number is drawn from your day of birth alone, reduced to a single digit from 1 to 9. It is also called the root, psychic or birth number. Where other numbers describe your name or the arc of your life, the radical number captures your instinctive self โ the first impression you give and the way you naturally respond to the world.
Because it comes from the date alone, everyone born on the same day of any month shares the same radical number. Two people born on the 14th โ one in March, one in October โ both carry the radical number 5.
How to find your radical number
Take the day of the month you were born and add its digits together until a single digit remains. If you were born on the 23rd, add 2 and 3 to get 5 โ your radical number is 5. Days that are already a single digit (1 to 9) need no reduction.

Radical number vs Life Path number
The radical number and the Life Path number (Bhagyank) are easy to confuse. The radical number uses only the day you were born and reads your inborn temperament. The Life Path number reduces your whole date of birth โ day, month and year โ and points to the broader direction your life tends to take. Many numerologists read the two together, and weigh the Life Path number a little more heavily because it reflects the full date.
How to read it
Each radical number is linked, in the Indian tradition, to a ruling planet, which colours its character and its lucky days and colours. Read it as a mirror for traits you may already sense in yourself โ a prompt for reflection, not a fixed verdict on who you can become.

Chat with KundliGPTFrequently asked questions
- What is Mulank?
- Mulank is the Indian name for the radical number โ the single-digit number found from the day of the month you were born. It describes your core nature and is one of the first numbers read in a numerology reading.
- How do I calculate my radical number?
- Add the digits of the day you were born until one digit remains. Born on the 23rd, 2 + 3 = 5, so your radical number is 5. A day from 1 to 9 is already your radical number.
- Is the radical number the same as the Life Path number?
- No. The radical number comes from your day of birth and shows your instinctive nature; the Life Path number (Bhagyank) comes from your full date of birth and points to your broader life direction.
- Can my radical number change?
- No. It is fixed by the day you were born and never changes. Only chosen numbers, such as a name or house number, can be adjusted.
