The 12 Houses of the Horoscope

Just as there are twelve zodiac signs, a horoscope has twelve houses, or bhavas. Each governs a distinct area of life, and the planets placed in and aspecting a house describe how that area unfolds. Here is what each of the twelve houses represents.

Historical significance

Predictive astrology — reading life through the chart and its twelve houses — grows from Jyotish, one of the Vedangas or 'limbs of the Veda'. Across the zodiac belt sit 27 nakshatras, and the classical texts, notably the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, set out how the planets, signs and houses together shape a person's path. The twelve bhavas are the framework that turns those positions into meaning.

1. First House · Ascendant

Self & personality

Significator: Sun

The self and the body — physical appearance, constitution, temperament and the overall vitality you are born with. As the rising sign, it colours how you meet the world and sets the frame for the whole chart.

2. Second House

Wealth & speech

Significator: Jupiter

Wealth and resources — earned money, savings and possessions — along with speech, family of origin, food and early upbringing. It shows how you accumulate and what you value.

3. Third House

Courage & siblings

Significator: Mars

Courage, initiative and self-effort, younger siblings, communication and skill with the hands, and short journeys. The house of personal drive and the will to push forward.

4. Fourth House

Home & mother

Significator: Moon

Home, mother, inner peace and emotional security, plus land, property, vehicles and the comforts of domestic life. It also touches early education and one's roots.

5. Fifth House

Children & creativity

Significator: Jupiter

Children and creativity, intelligence and higher learning, romance, and the merit carried from past good actions. The house of self-expression and what you bring forth.

6. Sixth House

Health & obstacles

Significator: Mars & Saturn

Obstacles, debts, disease and enemies, but also the capacity to overcome them through work, discipline and service. The house of daily routine, competition and resilience.

7. Seventh House

Marriage & partnership

Significator: Venus

Marriage and the spouse, committed partnerships and business alliances. It describes how you relate one-to-one and the qualities you seek in a partner.

8. Eighth House

Transformation & longevity

Significator: Saturn

Longevity and transformation, sudden events and upheavals, inheritance and joint resources, and the hidden or occult. The house of deep change and what lies beneath the surface.

9. Ninth House

Fortune & dharma

Significator: Jupiter

Fortune and higher purpose, the father and teachers, faith, philosophy, long journeys and higher wisdom. Widely regarded as the most auspicious house of luck and grace.

10. Tenth House

Career & status

Significator: Sun, Mercury, Jupiter & Saturn

Career, profession and public standing — your work in the world, authority, reputation and achievement. The house at the top of the chart, pointing to your visible contribution.

11. Eleventh House

Gains & friendships

Significator: Jupiter

Gains and income, the fulfilment of desires and ambitions, friends, networks and elder siblings. The house of returns — what flows back to you from your efforts.

12. Twelfth House

Spirituality & loss

Significator: Saturn & Ketu

Expenditure and loss, withdrawal and rest, foreign lands and distant places, and ultimately spiritual liberation. The house of letting go and what lies beyond the material.
